The recent assault and the ensuing firefight represent a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions within Kosovo, marking one of the most critical incidents in years. These events come after months of mounting discord and stalled negotiations between the Pristina government and Serbia.
A group of armed assailants took refuge in a monastery situated in northern Kosovo, leading to a confrontation with local authorities on Sunday. Prime Minister Albin Kurti reported this development shortly after a police officer lost their life in an ambush involving firearms and explosives.
Kurti revealed that approximately 30 heavily armed individuals were now encircled by law enforcement near the village of Banjska, where the initial ambush occurred earlier on Sunday. He urgently called for the surrender of the armed group as the situation continued to unfold.
